Auckland Branch

Pink Ribbon Motorcycle Charity Ride - 8 October 2006

Check out the Wellington Branch Pink Ribbon ride

The 3rd annual WIMA Pink Ribbon Ride took place Sunday 8th October 2006. We were anticipating a big turn out and due, in part, to the kindness of the weather our expectations were almost met. After a lot of advertising, including posters, flyers, stories in the local papers and radio stations plugging the event, we had just under 240 bikes turn out (the official count as the bikes left the start was 232 and the count as they came into the end of the ride was 238).

The ride went smoothly and without a hitch thanks to the Police escort (two cars & three bikes) and a green traffic light wave, which gave the entourage an uninterrupted ride. The only hiccup, if it can be called that, was the front police car traveling extremely slowly that caused some problems with bike handling and over heating. Unfortunately the police controlled the speed and for varying reasons (one of them being the motorway traffic management) kept it a lot slower than some of the participants would’ve liked. This will be addressed with the police prior to next years ride.

A lot of effort was put into bike & rider decoration and it was a wonderful sight seeing so much pink riding along Tamaki Dr.

On arrival at Western Springs Stadium the crowd, & there seemed to be lots of people, swarmed to the two coffee vans and the sausage sizzle team while the army of volunteers mingled through the array of people & bikes selling raffle tickets and the last of the amazing 2006 Pink Ribbon Badges.

Thanks to the amazing talents of Lisa Shelley, & generosity of our sponsors, an array of spot & raffle prizes were handed out during the informal presentation ceremony.

Laura from the NZ Breast Cancer Foundation spoke and accepted a cheque of $4000 that has been added to the $622,000 raised during the October Breast Cancer Awareness month and Pink Ribbon Day Appeal.

There are so many thank yous – without the support of friends, family, sponsors, Police & venues our hugely successful event wouldn’t be possible. To you all THANK YOU.

We look forward to seeing you all next year –

SUNDAY 14th OCTOBER 2007
Please put that date in your diary
