WIMA 1993 Rally

The 1993 WIMA Rally was organised by Pauline Sloane and held at Waiotapu near Rotorua. This view of the site was taken from an old storage shed on site, looking across at the field that had been reserved for the games. The weekend was overcast with light rain falling on and off during the day, so huddling under shelter was a priority at times. The site itself was surrounded by tall Pine forest with an abundance of birds.

I must admit I have a soft spot for rallies where, if the weathers shitty, you've got somewhere to go to keep warm, dry and tell tall tales. So this years WIMA rally was all I could ask for.

I made my slow and bumpy (I really must fix the mono-shock...) way to Waiotapu from Hawkes Bay on Saturday morning. Hubby traveled in style on the RZ. We arrived in time to pitch the tent and search out some film for the camera before the games started.

It was amusing watching 'the blokes" speeding around the obstacle course. Many bit-the-dust on the slippery grass. Holly eventually won on her fully laden, just arrived on bike. She then went on to cause a stir in the cross-dressing competition. Holly in a skirt!!! Photographic evidence was needed.

Afterwards I went exploring and discovered there was nothing much to see but trees. Strange that, we're in the middle of a forest. There was an adventure course to play on with a choice of two flying foxes. Well, two if you felt like a dip in the stream.

Here we have Andrew Jones from Hawkes Bay competing in one of the motorcycle included games, the obstacle course on his 1986 Yamaha RZ500. Other games included slow race, handbag toss - oh and just for some light relief - the powder puff toss. Strangely enough this event was won by a guy.

As the light faded, the stomach grumbled. Diner Time. The search for food took me to the sign-in desk where baked potatoes hot chips, and other delights awaited. Even a trailer full of cold cans - for when supplies ran low.

Prize giving came next. The usual assortment: Best European Bike; Best Japanese; First Entrant; Youngest Entrant; Oldest; etc. Then a few more unusual: First Spotted in the Spotlight - Barbara Taylor; Next Spotted -in the Spotlight - the man she was with; Best Butt - Ajay F-J. Im sure half the fun was in naming the events.

The night progressed. The liquor-aided tales grew taller. But wait - there's more entertainment. The MiSsed WIMA Rally. With only, 6 entrants, competition was fierce. This intrepid reporter is still unsure as to whom won. No doubt all shall be revealed, but not by the contestants!

When Sunday dawned it was wet again. And even tho I dodged the puddles on my slow trip home, I still acquired a liter or two of water in each boot!

Till next time.

..." no Ive only got B&L."
"Is that like B&D?!"
"Yes, but only better - you can lick your fingers afterwards!"
